Home of Houseplants is pleased to announce that we are the official South Australian distributor of Eucalyptus deglupta -Rainbow Gums - the most beautiful tree in the world. Definately not an indoor plant, these trees fall into our rare an unique category and must be grown outdoors. Home of Houseplants can post these trees Australia wide, (except currently for WA), including Tas and NT, due to our accrediation to do so with Biosecurity SA.
Eucalyptus deglupta is native to the Philipines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea and the only Eucalyptus species that usually lives in rainforest, with a natural range that extends into the northern hemisphere.
It is one of only four eucalypt species out of more than seven hundred that do not occur in Australia It is characterized by multi-colored bark. Eucalyptus deglupta is a fast-growing tree that typically reaches a height of 60–75 m with the trunk up to 240 cm in diameter, when allowed to mature. It has smooth, orange-tinted bark that sheds in strips, revealing streaks of pale green, red, orange, grey, and purplish brown.
These saplings have been grown under commercial arrangement with owner of seed stock, Rainbow Eucalyptus Australia, who over five years ago, after extensive research, imported accredited seed stocks from Phillipines. This seed is proven to colour up (commercial production of these trees over the last few years has demonstrated this.) Rainbow eucalyptus Australia has also supplied the Melbourne Botanic Garden and significant rare plant collections in Australia.
To elaborate there are large leaf and small leaf genuine rainbow eucalyptus. These trees on offer are the small leaf variety grown from Phillipines imported quarantined seed, to ensure quality and authenticity. Beware of wrong trees being sold as Rainbow eucalyptus from some Qld/Brisbane nurseries ! Despite being made aware one large seller was continuing to sell them even after receiving confirmation they are not deglupta.
Can tolerate light frost quite well. May die off but reshoot. And the key thing is they are super super thirsty, so require consistent and regular watering, especially in the first few years. Colours will start to appear once the trees starts to mature.
Currently planted in 140ml pots, these trees will however be sent bare rooted. Current size from soil level is approx 40cm.
